Here's a photo of the backrest bracket I made from scratch. The Kawasaki
accessory was on backorder, plus they wanted $65 for this thing.
Materials used:
One piece of 1/8" stainless steel from the scrap yard, $2
various hacksaw blades and drill bits
polishing wheels and buffing compounds
sandpaper
stainless steel bolts
After cutting with a hacksaw, I ground the pieces into proper shape on a
bench grinder, then drilled the "V" holes, then sanded and polished
everything. The heads of the SS Allen screws are also polished.
To achieve this mirror finish (notice my ugly mug in the reflection) it is
best to use a "SCT" buffing compound from the hardware store, which seems
to work better than Jeweler's Rouge.
Note, this is *real* work to make, so if you don't like to tinker with
things and fabricate parts, you're probably better off buying it. I was
attracted by the prospect of no rust ever, and no chrome breaking off at
the edges.
