Highland House Run
(Story by Don "BlckChrome" Soland, VROC #60,
photos by Rick "Wolfman" Jakubas, VROC #3)
13 bikes and 5 wives/S.O.'s met on this cool sunny Midwest morning to ride the short run to Highland House Restaurant, a favorite Chicagoland location that attracts hundreds of assorted bikes every Sunday. So I don't forget anyone, I'll just thank all that attended. This celebration ride, turned sadly into a memorial ride for Johnny "Flash". I doubt any of our group had ridden with him, yet his death yesterday, still hit us all hard. Just a week ago a similar experience on our Door County Wisc. run, luckily had one of our own walking away.

After gathering and admiring each other's bike, we shared a
few moments of condolecences for Johnny "Flash" and
reviewed some hand signals and safe driving techniques for riding
in groups. We then rumbled on to the Highland House to find bikes
double parked even into the adjoining gas station.
A
45 minute wait for a table to accommodate us found us wondering
around, admiring all the other shining bikes of every manufacture.
Finally seated, we shared some good food, great conversation and
Evan "Bulldog" decided to organize gathering of some
memorial funds to be forwarded to "Flash's " family
to be used at their discretion. Thanks "Bulldog".
We then wandered back into the parking lot to lay a plan, and our now group of 10, rumbled West to enjoy some country roads with our own Wolfman and his wife Patsy, on her second time on a bike but looking like a pro, leading the way. Unfortunately a major thunderstorm decided to spoil our day and our band disbanded to race to respective homes or rain suit retailers.
It was a short day, a day to be
extra careful, a pleasurable ride with good friends, new and
old, and a day to honor a VROC Brother who went on his last ride
only one day earlier.
Thank you fellow Chicago riders and Rest in Peace Johnny "Flash"
~~~Ride Safe VROCS~~~
